Who we are.
Established in March 1997 the RSL guild was originally lunched by Information OnLINE®, a consortium of the six big internet search engines and several major internet steak holders.
IN early 96' the net users journal "netWORLD®" published a survey which shocked the industry in to ACTION. The trade and net service provider survey demonstrated that with its current rate of growth by the year 2000 the internet will become an "untenable source of information" and therefore profit. There will be in excess of 80 million html documents on the net and the growth in net traffic is expected to have an "negatively exponential impact" on access times, resulting in a dinosaur of a system which will be ineffectual for users and advertisers alike.
Information OnLIne®, itself established soon after, they set themselves clear objectives; Increase the quality of infromation available on the net and also increase ease of access to this information.
The RSL guild is an integral part of
achieving these two objectives. We are a none profit making organization and are
completely funded by Information OnLINE®. Our sister company "Net Pollution - No
Thanks" is also affiliated to Information OnLINE®.
What we do.
Over 50% of all site hits made are the
result of "links from another page". Over 60% of such hits made, result in a
"Back Button Escape" which indicates that the user wasn't interested in the hit
page. That represents an awful lot of REDUNDANT web traffic!
The RSL Guild promotes "Selective
Web Site Promotion". This means two things:
1) Only linking into pages which meet some
basic guidelines on the quality of information they contain
and
2) Giving sufficient information on the
linking page so that the user can make an informed decision on whether they want to go to
that link.
How we do it.
The RSL guilds lies largely upon the
GOOD SENSE of the users of the Web. We have over 1.5 Million members and the number is
growing fast! All these people with GOOD SENSE realize that selective web site promotion
is a necessary step to maintaining a healthy WWW environment. Just like throwing your
glass bottles in the bottle bank a little effort from you NOW is making a healthier
environment for our "children of the FUTURE".
When you join the RSL guild you commit to
following the guidelines of the RSL guild when you select and advertise links on your
pages. You must also report any ABUSERS of the RSL Guild HONOR policy. In doing so we add
value to the WWW environment by ensuring that you will not pollute the WWW with
misinformation or poor qality infromation.

Once I've joined what have I committed to?
1) Following the Guidelines of the RSL
guild when selecting and advertising links. (These guidelines will be sent to you when you
join along with your first issue of Readers Digest with complimentary binder).
2) Submission of all new URL's which you
add to link to your page to the RSL guild for our (random) appraisal. This is done by a
simple e-mail and ftp telnet dial-up link. All URL's submitted will also be automatically
added to our search engine "MX5 VFR750" unless otherwise requested.
3) The random periodic re-evaluation of
your site by the RSL guild to ensure that you still fulfill our selection criteria.
4) Advertising the RSL guild logo on the
"Links" page of your site, and the obligatory prime placement of our free bumper
sticker.
5) The option of quitting the RSL guild at
any time. Your URL will then be removed from "MX5 VFR 750".
6) A lifetimes subscription to the Readers
digest.
I really can't be bothered, why should I be?
The WWW is a invaluable resource which will become PRACTICALLY unusable within 3 years unless we begin to act now with strongly backed campaigns such as this one. This is not FISH mongering, this is FACT!
Also, sites who display the RSL guild logo are recognized by the industry and other web-users as high quality sites and fine places to be.
How do I join?

sent an e-mail confirming your application has been submitted. You will be advised on the
success of your application within 3 - 17 weeks. We apologize for the long backlog time
but as all the sites and computers have to be visited by an representative of the RSL
guild this is unavoidable.
